The Principles of Design- 4" panels made on Adobe Illustrator
This assignment asks you to communicate the 7 principles of design in 4" panels but instead of drawing them by hand you will be making each one on the computer using Adobe Illustrator. Start with basic shapes like ovals, circles, squares and stars. I will show you ways to manipulate the basic shapes as we progress. When you are done you will print them, cut them out and mount them the same way we did the Elements of Art. See image below to know the order to put them in.
Done? Please download this word file and answer the questions to reflect on your process in making these panels. Then, erase the questions and print it.

Balance
To understand balance, think of the balance beam. When objects are of equal weight, they are in balance. If you have several small items on one side, they can be balanced by a large object on the other side. Visual balance works in much the same way.
Symmetrical Balance- the same on both sides
Asymmetrical Balance- different on both sides but still visually balanced
Radial Balance- everything comes from a center point

Pattern
The elements of Art repeat in a predictable manner.
Some examples are zig zag or polka dots.

Emphasis
One method used to attract attention in a design is the use of a focal point. A focal point draws your attention to the most important element on the page. If most of the elements in a work of art are grouped closely together, an object by itself stands out as a focal point |
Emphasis by Contrast
Uses the differences between things to make something stand out. If the rest of the elements are repeated, a different shape will stand out. Emphasis by Placement
An object placed in the center will often be perceived as a focal point. If all eyes in the design look at one object that object will be perceived as the focus of the work. |
Contrast
Contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.
The colors white and black provide the greatest degree of contrast. Complementary colors also highly contrast with one another. They are across from each other on the color wheel.

Movement
The suggestion of motion in a work of art or design by the relationship of the basic elements in a design or composition.
In graphic design, movement is also known as flow. Flow is the combination of elements (line shape, color, etc.) to guide the viewer around the design in the correct direction.
Why is important?
You want the viewer to see everything in the correct order and you want the viewer to look at your design for as long as possible.

Rhythm
- is a principle in which some elements are drawn regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beats of music. It's just like pattern and shows that the design has a 'beat' or 'flow' going with it. The timed "beat" is sensed by the eyes rather than the ears. A plain white box has no rhythm what so ever. |
Unity
The total visual effect in a design achieved by the careful blending of the elements of art and the principles of design.
All the elements of art and principles of design combined into one design.
Variety: Variety is the use of different elements.
Too much unity, too much of the same thing, leads to boredom. But, too much variety leads to chaos.
